Wii Fit – Depressing Honesty

I picked up the Wii Fit on Sunday. Well I am going to be honest…I am depressed. That darn thing is brutally honest. At least it didn’t make fun of me…directly that is. I feel I should be on “The Biggest Loser”. I didn’t realize that my scale at the house was 10 pounds off and not in favorable way either. I would post what it said but I dare say I am quite embarrassed by it. I was happy that I at least wasn’t near the max weight for the controller. Even if I don’t use it for anything else it looks like a cool way to track my progress with how I am doing with the EA Active 30 day Challenge. A nice scale (really nice) would cost as much as the Wii Fit does. I am not exactly keen on the fact that you have to unlock exercises since it seems any exercise is good. I am done with the depressing part but for me it is all to obvious how I gained my weight. Check out the video and know I won’t be skipping the workout today!

My Goal

Well I was going to blog about why spammers would be more successful if they didn’t post comments like “Hi, very nice post. I have been wonder’n bout this issue, so thanks for posting” or why a Twitter user named @ghtiyjklksjd would have trouble being followed. Instead though, I am going to tell you what my personal physical fitness goal is.

The goal: to be able to do the CrossFit workout named “Fran” in firefighting gear and on air (I don’t care how many cylinders or minutes it takes either).

My current state of fitness can be explained by two words “Big Boy.” I am actually thinner than I was but I could do much better. Before, I began any working out I weighted in at 275 and my poor size 40’s were saying “excuse me but don’t you think we are a bit small.” It seemed 275 kind of snuck up on me. I just got on the scale and bam that number was looking at me. Something about that number seemed way to close to 300 and then 400 and then next thing you know the piano sized coffin. I don’t eat right and I don’t want to. I now do Crossfit on and off. The first time I did the “Fran” workout I really had trouble walking for a week. Now I can do it in roughly 15 minutes (with assistance on the pull-ups). I am adjusting the EA Active squats to be like Thrusters. I may even start Weight Watchers! Arghhhh! It does work. My wife is down 60 pounds because of it. Bottom line I need to get on the ball.

Fitness Friday – Wii Moms

It’s lunch time at work so I am going to try to fit this post in. Since my boss at work(@knightopia) has introduced me to Twitter I have been addicted. I didn’t know what it was about so I followed local people in Fort Mill and Tega Cay. This led me to following @Momspective. She is pretty darn funny and one thing leads to another and somehow I am following all sorts of mommies. Well I have to fight an inner struggle with the fact that this group of moms is who I chat with the most. I mean really how masculine is that. I think maybe I should do less laundry and vacuuming. The going topic is the new EA Active and they have a website too. Check it out at WiiMommies.com. I told my wife about all the coupon cutting our family should be doing and Wii fit stuff. She explained that I could do the grocery shopping now and that she wants EA Active for her birthday. Well I got her the EA Active for her birthday. The shopping hasn’t changed hands but I am definitely thinking about it. Today I am really long winded. I used to hate writing but strangely I am vomiting words (good visual right?) What was I talking about? Oh yeah fitness! I wrote a post “Up the Challenge! Pimp your EA Active!” where I talk about upgrading the bands. Well last night I did my first workout with the new “Medium” band. WOW! I am sore now. I think they really need to include a few different bands for different levels. My legs have been getting a great workout and I am always sweating but my arms never felt like they did anything. When I go to the Y my max bench is 275 lbs but that is because I am fat and I hate to do cardio so I hit the weights. The EA Active is what I needed for cardio and the new bands make it perfect.  If they figured out a way to have the game yell at me when I have a candy bar it would be the perfect trainer. Well lunch is almost over so I need to get back to it. This post just wouldn’t be finished with out giving some link love out to my favorite EA Active motivator… @SuperJennBlogs You know I have been leaving music videos so I got one to motivate your next workout next workout do it

Up the Challenge! Pimp your EA Active!

The Wii EA Active is great but not quite awesome. I find many of the exercises that use the bands are not as good as they could be. The reason is those bands are just pitiful. Maybe mine were already stretched out before I got them. I really doubt that I would be considered to be in good shape so we can rule that out.  I have slowly been building my home gym up to become a Crossfit Home Gym. Crossfit is a whole different level of pain but like #wiimoms it has an awesome community of people. So now I am totally off topic. Topic On.  I have done 3 workouts and they have made me sweat like crazy but I have only been a tad sore and it’s more from stuff I haven’t done before like the side lunges. Have you been thinking the same thing? If so read on cause I got a way to make it brutal. (Disclaimer: I haven’t a clue about what I am talking about. Maybe you should ask your doctor before you have a heart attack doing something some idiot posted on a blog).

Exhibit A

Exhibit A

First thing’s first those bands have to be upgraded. I went out and found this set of bands that came as a pack of 3. Each has a different resistance. They are a little shorter then the band that came with the EA Active.  I had some web strapping from my personal fire gear for rope rescue but this stuff only cost $1-2 per foot and I used about 4 foot of a 20 foot length I had. You can find something much cheaper then this or consider it an upgrade. I got the webbing from REI. Exhibit A: bands and webbing.

Exhibit B

Exhibit B

I went ahead and since I am doing medium workouts I thought I would pick the medium band which happened to be the blue one. I used the same method to tie the webbing to the bands as the EA Active ones. Exhibit B: on left is original EA Active band and on the right is the medium band. Even the “red” band that came in the set of 3 is harder to work with than the EA Active one. Now go work out (and don’t even think about setting it up on easy).

40 Pound Weight Vest

40 Pound Weight Vest

I figured you were thinking that… switching bands? That’s it? Heck no lets get that heart rate going on all the leg exercises too. Next, we are going to add a weight vest to the workout. For me I chose the 40 lb variety. I had one sitting around when I decided I would train for the CPAT firefighter test that I failed on a major level. For the CPAT the vest is 50lbs and they add an additional 25 lbs to that when you are doing stairs so the 40lb vest is light. In fact, mow the yard with the vest on and now you can tack that on to your extra activity with a higher intensity level.

That’s all I got for now. Maybe if that isn’t brutal enough you can add some ankle weights but I think this should do you for a while.

Wii EA Active workout

I got a song that may sound familiar to you and if you pretend I am not singing then it will be better for you in the long run.

“Here’s a little sorry I got to tell about 3 bad brothers you know so well. It started way back in history with @Momspective, @SuperJennBlogs and me Chris B (@DeNifty) …” If you don’t recognize the song then I will provide a link when I am done with my story of how this could have happened to me. Lets start from the beginning.

Random events that led to purchase of said EA Active:

  • I joined Twitter
  • I followed as many people as I could that were in Fort Mill/Charlotte Area
  • @Momspective happens to live in said area
  • read some Momspective blog and ended up at wiimommies.com
  • ended up following more interesting moms on twitter (strange but true)
  • went to a party on Memorial day (put on by @MrsJennyO) and chatted about all these #wiimoms and what they did even though I really didn’t know that much
  • wife heard me talking about this in a group of mothers (strange but true) and decided she wanted this for her birthday
  • I thought long and hard about being the “husband that gave his wife a wii game that was supposed to get her fit” for her birthday…seemed like one of those women test that they put men through
  • gave it to her on her birthday…I passed the test… it really was what she wanted

So there is the short version of how it came to sit in our family festivities room. I thought about actually doing the 30 day challenge and @SuperJennBlogs decided to encourage me to start or nag me to get the house painted. Well so I didn’t have to tell her that I didn’t do it yet another day, I went ahead and started the 30 day challenge at 11:30 PM. It’s now officially. I did it on #fitnessfriday.

Here’s what I thought about Day 1:

  • I feel stupid walking/running in place
  • I like punching targets
  • squats were awesome for getting form right but there wasn’t many of them compared to a Crossfit workout
  • I sweated a lot on the Medium setting
  • I like the fact that when your running someone tries to pass you…in my case it was an old man with a walker
  • the band included didn’t have much resistance so I used bands that we had from a previous workout set
  • the skate ramps were good for motivating me to stay in a squat position

All-in-all, I sweat therefore it was good. Tomorrow I am going to paint and do Day 2. Now for the song I referred to above.
